Deputy Director of Communications Job Summary:

Sparks Group is looking for a Deputy Director of Communications to join a well-known institution in Washington, DC. This will be hybrid opportunity (3 days onsite, 2 remote).

Deputy Director of Communications Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning, oversight, production and implementation of communications-related activities, including, but not limited to: website, press, media relations, social media, publications, awards, grant writing, presentations, and multimedia/video.
  • Ensures all departments within the company have appropriate access to messaging. Responsible for creation of engaging content for various platforms catering to numerous user groups.
  • Develops effective communication strategies and correlated tactics.
  • Manages and improves internal communications (memos, newsletters, etc.), as well as external communications flows.
  • Drafts content (e.g., press releases) for mass media or website. Researches and writes press releases, and content for the website, infographics, blogs, and newsletters.
  • Determines content topics, coordinates with others to obtain information, writes, edits, designs and sends content to internal and external audiences.
  • Organizes initiatives and plan events or press conferences.
  • Liaises with media and handles requests for interviews, statements etc.
  • Collaborates with marketing professionals to produce copy for advertisements or articles.
  • Develops and implements a communication strategy that includes media outreach and social media content creation.
  • Acquires and maintains a detailed knowledge of company/department policies, principles, and strategies, and keeps up-to-date with relevant developments.
  • Supports and evaluates results of communication campaigns with the team.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with journalists and key external players.

Deputy Director of Communications Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in communications, public relations, or media relations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear and persuasive messages for diverse audiences.
  • Strong editing skills and deep understanding of audience, tone and style.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, media relations, and crisis communication.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms, including social media management, content management systems, and email marketing software.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
